What is beverly bass?

Beverly Bass is a retired American airline pilot who made history as the first female captain for American Airlines in 1986. She was also the first female captain of a Boeing 737 in the world. Bass became a pioneering figure in the field of aviation, breaking down barriers for women in a male-dominated industry.

Bass is perhaps best known for her role as the captain of American Airlines Flight 49 on September 11, 2001. On that fateful day, her flight was diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, Canada due to the closure of U.S. airspace following the terrorist attacks. Bass and her crew, along with the passengers on board, were stranded in Gander for five days, but they were embraced by the local community and received support and hospitality during their unexpected stay.

Bass's story was later featured in the hit Broadway musical "Come From Away," which tells the story of the events in Gander on 9/11. She continues to share her inspiring story and advocate for women in aviation.
